A week of meetings, demonstrations, and productive discussions has marked an important milestone in Papua New Guinea’s journey towards a more coordinated and transparent approach to infrastructure development.
Earlier this month, the Sustainable Infrastructure Foundation (SIF), together with local counterparts and development partners, conducted a mission to Port Moresby to formally launch the implementation of SourceX, the multilateral digital platform designed to support governments in preparing, managing, and monitoring infrastructure projects.
The mission brought together representatives from key government agencies, including the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), the National Monitoring and Coordination Authority (NMCA), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), as well as a range of stakeholders involved in infrastructure planning, financing, and delivery.
A central objective of the mission was to introduce SourceX and begin discussions on how the platform can be adapted to PNG’s institutional and development context.
Discussions focused on practical implementation questions, including project preparation processes, data management, reporting requirements, governance arrangements, and how SourceX can complement existing government systems. Stakeholders demonstrated a strong interest in understanding how the platform can support improved coordination across agencies while providing better visibility over the national infrastructure pipeline.
One of the highlights of the mission was the first gathering of key stakeholders to discuss governance arrangements for the implementation of SourceX. Participants recognised the value of creating a more structured and transparent approach to project preparation while ensuring that implementation remains firmly owned by government.
The discussions also reinforced the complementary roles of DNPM and NMCA in the management of infrastructure projects. By engaging both institutions from the outset, the implementation aims to strengthen coordination across government and build long term institutional resilience.
The implementation will also focus on strengthening project appraisal, pipeline management, reporting, and coordination across government. Over time, SourceX will support PNG in developing a more structured, transparent, and investable infrastructure pipeline, aligned with national development priorities and international good practices.
The strong engagement demonstrated throughout the mission provides confidence that PNG is well placed to take advantage of this opportunity. With continued collaboration between government agencies, development partners, and SIF, SourceX has the potential to become an important component of PNG’s infrastructure governance framework and support the delivery of more resilient and sustainable infrastructure outcomes for years to come.
